Miri, Sarawak minus Nyiah and Mulu

If you go to Miri , you must make an effort to go to Mulu to see the Unesco heritage of the 4 main caves. To go to Mulu, you need to fly there by Maswings, and at least stay a night there. Timing was not right and there was no flight out from Miri back to KL. Right smack near the school holidays 23 May and the Gawai holidays at the end of May. So for any trip to Miri, make sure that your timing is correct. According to friends, this Unesco heritage is really beautiful.

So,if no Mulu, next think of the Nyiah Caves. This needs at least one full day to appreciate the effort given.

There was no time to visit the Nyiah Caves since you need to go in the morning for a whole day tour. If not it is not worth the trouble of going there and walking in for a further 45 minutes.

So no Nyiah, no Mulu, what to do next? There are a few places to go to in Miri.
The photos taken below are three of them.

First, the Taman Awam of Miri. There is a suspended bridge at the park, nicely well kept, and the most beautiful of it, it is free, no entrance fee is needed.

The entrance to the Miri Public Park (Taman Awam Miri)

The hanging bridge

More than a section of the bridge

A sort of mini water park for the kids

A waterfall inside the park

Another section

Nice, right?

Next stop will be the Petronas Museum in town to see the Grand Old Lady. Thought that this must be really a lady statue or what. But then, it is the first oil well in Miri. A replica of it placed at the entrance of the museum.

The Grand Old Lady
Grand, right?

Some of the rocks that Geology students dig for and scrutinise during University days...haha..

Some of the nice exhibits inside on the oil industry

Dreaming, took an aerial view of Miri, from inside the musuem.

There is a main exhibition hall where there are exhibits on how and what people do for beauty, in the olden days and now, somewhere on our planet earth.

Some looks like we have to endure some kind of pain to gain the beauty.

See what I mean??

Some of the accessories for limbs and neck and ears too.
The last and third place was the latest fad in Miri, the Marina Bay. This place will be well lit up at night for revellers,

There is some sort of Yacht club at the side of the bay.

The seahorse is the trademark of Miri.

And lastly, some of the things one can buy in Miri, to remind you of the place.

Have a nice day, frens.

Sandakan, Sabah and also Sepilok, the Orang Utan Sanctuary

AirAsia flies twice daily from Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan daily. Malaysian airlines has more

flights but these MAS flights have to transit at Kota Kinabalu or pass through Brunei, though at

Bandar Seri Bagawan Airport , you are not allowed to alight from the plane, but can watch the

airport workers from the airplane side window.

Love to get down, but cannot....this is the Brunei airport....

See the luggage that goes down with the people going to Brunei.....

And for the people who has to transit at Kota Kinabalu, sometimes up to 2 hours, you can catch a

taxi to town, at RM20....this is what can be seen at KK town.

Outside the Filipino market at KK,

Inside the Filipino market at KK, a lot of costume jewellery to buy...that you just can't stop....and

so many stalls selling the same things.....until.....you don't know which to buy.

A glimpse of Le Meridien hotel in the background at about RM500 per night per room....

If you need any sewing, you can find them outside the Filipino market....

The waterfront in KK
The waterfront....another view

A cooling drink of coconut water, nothing so special about the drink

After the short glimpse of KK town , it is about time to go back to the airport and continue our

journey to Sandakan. Sandakan is the second largest town in Sabah, after KK.

Arrival at Sandakan airport....in the

The so called Fokker Friendship airplane....

The main place that people go to in Sandakan, that is Sepilok, the Orang Utan Rehabilitation

Centre. There is an entrance fee of RM5.00 per person for locals and foreigners, it's RM30 per

entry. With this one is allowed to watch a video and tour inside the sanctuary.

There are 2 feeding times a day, that is when they come out to find food, once in the morning

around 10 am and once around 3pm...Check out the times before you go. It is about an hour and

a half ( or more) to reach Sepilok from Sandakan

The information centre.

Waiting for 3pm, the arrival of their royal highnesses, the orang utan. Imagine so many people

waiting for their arrival.

Eating time, we are busy, do not disturb

Monkeying time, see how clever I am. Can you do this??

Imagine so many people, waiting for the whole gang to arrive.

I have had enough, I am going home.

So, that's the end of the orang utan show.

After which, it was time to visit one of the highest point in Sandakan, a Buddhist Sanctuary.

Name in Chinese, which I am not too good in. Please see it for yourself, folks.

The guide from Sandakan, who showed us the beauty of Sandakan from the top.

He is a Muslim, have not entered this temple before, so wanted a photo as remembrance.

See, how nice the sanctuary is, and peaceful to be at the top.

Time to eat, and went to this so called seafood Bak Kut Teh in Sandakan which opens at 6pm in

the evening. Definitely lose out to Klang Bak Kut teh anytime.

The fish from Sandakan.

The next morning, decided to pack seafood back to West Malaysia. You have to buy them one da

ahead and freeze them to carry them home. So, it is early in the morning, to market, to market

to buy a big fish....

The Sandakan hotel, right in town

Too early, no one work up yet.....

Oh oh,people coming out

Now, the fresh fish, some that we haven't seen before....BUT they were really dirt cheap.

If you don't happen to buy any from the market, there is another place to buy fresh frozen

seafood and saltfish.

Any lobsters, my friend??

Saltfish?? Never have I seen salt fish in this form.

Another place to buy, direct from the ships coming in...

This is behind the market.

And finally, dried prawns to bring home, for those who do not like to buy the fresh ones. They

really look good, according to this makchik in the market.

One last place before I stop, the library in Sandakan is one place I would like to recommend

those who love to read, especially my Chinese friends. This library has lots and lots of Chinese

books.I have never seen such a large collection of Chinese books in our local libraries.

All kinds.

So, that's about all that you can enjoy in Sandakan, if you happen to book a RM0 ticket on

AirAsia. Enjoy your trip,ya.
